I would have asked the server when she brought anouther beer would she please refill my friends tea also. I am not a ass to my servers but will speak up if I think I am being neglected. I tip well based on service and also understand if a place is extremely busy that I may have to wait a litte while but if I am just being ignored I have went as far as to asking anouther waitress for what I need and will give that waitress the tip in person. It was busy as usual. Well my beer glass never went empty.....but everybody elses tea sure did. Out of the 6 other people....only 4 ever got a refill (only 1 at that). The other two (both of which work as servers) never once got a refill. There glasses sat empty and we were there for 2 hours. I understand being busy, but if you can keep my beer glass full, why can't you find the time to keep the tea full too. Needless to say nobody else left much of a tip. My question is, what would you have done in that situation?

RE: Cheap People

i just wrote a really long post but the system timed me out so i lost it. to sum it up:

maybe not by their clothes or what they look like, but it is possible to tell if someone tips or not. work in the service industry for a few years and i bet you would learn the signs. This is not 100% accurate but is a good indicator. (BTW the richest guy i know will never be seen in anything other than mesh shorts, a t-shirt and tennis shoes...he is a very good tipper and only drinks miller light) 2nd richest guy that i know drives a 1980's VW rabbit and wears velcro shoes from walmart....he is a pathologist. of course you cant tell by what they wear. and even if you can, the amount of money they have does not indicate how much they will tip.

you guys wouldnt work for free, and neither should servers.

Deeplines: of course they are serving you but they are doing it for money!! Any good server would take care of you no matter if you tip or not. would you work for free?

I would never expect a low maintenace customer to tip me big. i didnt earn it. but if you have me running around all night i do not think a decent tip is too much to ask.

extraordinary service is rare, and should be graciously rewarded.

if you do not tip or are cheap with it, do not expect anything but the minimum from your servers, especially if you are a frequent patron. Dont expect for every body to know your name when you walk in the door. And dont expect extrarodinary service because you think you are special.

A server can do many things to make your meal/ night out more enjoyable. take care of them and they will certainly take care of you. if they dont, they are a bad server.

I agree with how vs200b tips. that is how i do it. and no, skeeter, i do not have money shooting out of my ass. I do not eat out frequently and plan for the tip when i do. If i dont have the money to tip, i am not going to go out. i am not going to make a server take care of me and not tip them based on how well they did. This doesnt mean i will always tip a lot when i go out, but I make sure i have the money to tip the server with the super human gift of extraordinary service, which is what i think vs200b does. I look really young, so many people automatically assume i will no tip well. when i find a server who gives me great service, you better believe i tip them handsomely.

I think there is more involved in the service industry than most people think. it takes a lot to be a good server on a consistent basis.

we can debate this over and over on this thread but it is not going to change anyone's opinion on the matter. different strokes for different folks.

RE: Cheap People
VS200B (5/15/2008)
it all depends on how the waiter/waitress SERVES YOU... i mean, it makes perfect sense
went to Jerry's drive inn (those people are great!) 2 people, $20 dollars worth of food = $10 tip

ruby tuesdays(service sucked a fat one!) 2 people, $56 dollars worth of grub, $4 dollar tip

melting pot(always excelent) 140 bucks worth of food, 40 dollar tip!
you have to EARN the money that i'm gonna pay.
ooh, and never be rude to your server (at least until after they bring you your food) It's usual not their fault anyways.
$10 tip for a $20 meal, and $40 for $140 meal............You must have money shooting out of your ass. We had a waitress get stiffed on a $2500 tab once. And she is a great waitress. always busts her ass to get stuff when needed. I get stiffed on a regular basis, but you can tell the people who are going to stiff you usually. of course, i give everyone the benefit of the doubt because you never know, but once they show me that they are cheap a-holes, they will be lucky to get anything from me. of course, bar service is differnet than a restaurant. unless you have a credit card everything is paid as you go. hell, i will go out on the floor and take orders like a waitress before i serve a cheap prick at the bar who doesnt tip. and i consider myself a good bartender. i know i am because i get big tips from people all the time, and i have customers who come in just to see me on my shifts. I take pride in making a great drink and love it when people say "make that thing you gave me before. it is awesome." If people are doing this, i know i am a good bartender.

But to be honest, i would rather be stiffed than be given change. If i get someone a beer and they reach in their pocket and take their pennies and nickels and throw them in my tip jar. it just makes me want to explode. of course, most people who do this dont have the balls to stay sitting at the bar after they do this. i had one guy do it and stay at the bar. i picked up my tip jar and dumped it in the trash right in front of him. if your gonna be cheap, at least stiff me and blame it on having some sort of principle against tipping. There is no need to be rude.

The hours a bartender works does suck, but one good thing is that when i get off of work i have just enough time to run home and get my fishing stuff to get on that early morning bite.

Even as a bartender i have not tipped before. at TGI Friday's i went in there, ordered drinks only to recieve them 30 mins later. then she walks away and we dont even get to order for another 15 minutes, the next time she came by our table. Se came back to take our order, and we saw her one more time after that, to bring the check. and it wasnt even busy!! i wrote 0.00 on the receipt and the words "tip reflects service" that is the only time i have ever felt that a server did not deserve a tip.

I do make a good living doing what i do, but i would not do it for a penny less than i make. I am sure there are many people who would love to have my job, but they cant do it the way i do. So when the tips dry up from people not tipping, i will move on, actually put my college degree to use, and let some slacker serve people. if that is what people want i would be more than willing to oblige.

RE: Cheap People
SKEETER (5/13/2008)

Pourman1 (5/13/2008)
ALL of you should try the Service Industry before commenting on this topic ... if you've never done it before , your opinions have NO relevance :nonono ... As many now have found out, and in doing so has offered any size drink for a buck. Rest assured that if McDonald's wasn't feeling the pinch they sure in the hell wouldn't give everyone a break. But I'm smarter then most folks about fountain drinks. That is where the most profit (per single item) is made. The average drink actually cost less then the cup they put it in. Not sure about now but in the past a large drink actually cost about $.05 (in a paper cup), now with the wide use of Styrofoam a penny or two more. with a cupful of ice less then that. If I get a drink, which is seldom (I don't drink with a meal) I get either very lite ice or no ice as the drink is cold to start with.

RE: Cheap People

I like mutton, or lamb chops...

RE: Cheap People
sailfish90 (5/13/2008)
I've noticed a lot of restaurant closings throughout the Tampa area, it seems a new trend is beginning or something. I'll leave even more.

RE: Cheap People

I eat out on the road A LOT.

that is exactly how I tip....meter always starts at zero.

If you get a lot of small or no tips...perhaps you need to do something different in your service or find a new job.

The small tips are a MESSAGE.

BTW...I rarely have issues where it gets below 10 to 15%
just lucky I guess

RE: Cheap People
grouper22 (5/13/2008)
Now that is a perfect example, shitty attitude = no tip.
We usually go out to the same few places so we rarely have a proplem with crappy service. So in saying that if I ever have you as a server and I get shitty servive...my tip to you will be $0.01
Been there done that....So you feel that if I get shitty service and don't tip, that I'm cheap. No I'm not, I just don't pay for something I'm not getting, that is frugal. If a server thinks they deserve a tip because it is industry accepted, you damn well need to get into another line of work.
I have a house in Greenville, MS. I have a boy cut the grass twice a month. I also have a friend that drives by to look after it. The day the grass was cut he drove by, told me the back yard looked great but the front wasn't cut. The yard man called me and told me he cut the grass and that I could mail the check. I asked about the front yard and he told me he cut it. I told him that I was informed that it wasn't, and he tried to tell me he did it. I told him about my friend and what was told to me. The front was then cut before my friend passed by the next day to take a picture. Should I of payed for a half yard cutting....I think not...same thing in tipping.

RE: Cheap People

this post was free Mike!!

When you coming back??

RE: Cheap People

Now that is a perfect example, shitty attitude = no tip.

We usually go out to the same few places so we rarely have a proplem with crappy service. I had the pleasure of working with Murph this past weekend and he sure busts his ass in that HOT kitchen for what he doesn't gets paid. Murph...my hat is off to you (as well as your co cooks) ,as you really must love what you are doing and the hours you put in.
Unlike others I have a range of tips that I give out. I NEVER leave nothing...NEVER. If what you consider bad service and warrants no tip...I leave $0.01...That tells the server he did a shitty job vs forgetting. I will also talk to the manager on two occasions...1) Bad service...2) Exceptional service..that goes along with the food. My tips vary from $0.01 for bad/lack of service, 10% for good but nothing out of the ordinary, 15-20% for those that are there without my asking for them. I don't tip on the entire bill....If I'm going to tip around 15% I'll double the tax...easiest way to figure.

How I feel about delivery as in Pizza is another story. I've done it and those cheap BAS****S that stiff get my goat. I've seen cases that it cost me/drivers money to make that delivery to the customer. I tip drivers what it would cost ME in gas to drive there and pick it up plus extra based on the time it took.

I had a customer that worked for UPS (they make good bucks), he/she never tipped. One night I took the change of all of $.16 and lined it on the roof of his car so they would see it when they got in. That was the last time they stiffed any driver. Think about it..some drivers get your Pizza to you within 30 minutes, drive as much as a 20 mile round trip and get NOTHING.........It just cost him about $2.00 out of his pocket to make that delivery. I help a neighbor at his Pizza shop a couple nights a week as he needs ideas on how to better run his new business. I told him that I would NEVER deliver the first Pizza in my auto. PERIOD. At that store they drive as much as a 20 mile round trip and it cost no less then $3.50 just in gas, and get what a $1.50 per run, NO WAY. One driver had 5 stiffs (less then $1.00..just the change) in a row one night.:banghead:banghead:banghead

RE: Cheap People

First off I agree with Murph, I have been on the cooking side and the server side. I never tip based on what the cost of the meal is! I have been to buffets and had great service and have been to fine dining and had shitty service and attitude. The restraunts that we frequent we have made friends with the servers and they take good care of us. I tip based on SERVICE not the price of the food. I have given $10-15 at for a $46 bill at Barnhills and have left $5 at "nicer" restraunts. Bottom line = do your JOB and take care of your customers and quit thinking of them as just anouther tip! And never try to judge your tip by apparance I have seen servers that kiss people wearing a suits arse and them leave a $2 tip while I am dressed casual and leave $10.

And yes I tip my barber!

RE: Cheap People

so...just how much should a waiter or waitress make in one hour? $8, $12, $18? how many tables are required for that? At some point the value of a meal, including service,is only worth so much. If someone wants to make 200 per hour, then maybe waiting is not the right profession for them. One could go broke just by tipping...hair, cab, airport baggage guy, waiter, etc.

RE: Cheap People

ive seen it but thats 2 different subjects. remember tips come after your meal not before. they dont know what their getting till its done. besides they need to earn it like everyone else earns their wages. that would be like me(the waiter or waitress) sitting in my air conditioned service truck and only going out there to work when something breaks or absolutely needs to be fixed(angry customer not getting the service he deserves) instead of being out there working all the time on stuff to keep it running well(happy customer who leaves nice tip).

RE: Cheap People

It seems like most of the kids working at different places are just there to grab-ass, and act like asses. I'll say this, if me or my family run out of drink, it will be reflected in your tip. If it's empty for a while your not getting a thing. That to me is one of the most important things when i'm eating. Thats like the Chili's in pace when they first opened they were very unprepaired for the surge that they had, but as a consumer thats not my problem. I even gave them another shot, but still left madder than a box of spiders. Bottom line bad service = $0.00.

RE: Cheap People

some of you guys should see the movie WAITING it is closer to real life than you think.remember DONT MESS WITH THE PEOPLE THAT HANDLE YOUR FOOD.

RE: Cheap People

well...they do say you are supposed to EARN a living.... :doh

RE: Cheap People
Out Align (5/12/2008)
I think the problem with a lot of these servers is they expect a 15% and up tip from everyone, they see the tables full of tips and not people. I don't look at it like that. Your tip starts at 0% when you walk up to the table as you have done nothing for me. As you work and serve me your tip goes up.
Also I don't tip as much at buffet joints, if I'm getting my own food and all you do is tell me where to sit and check on my drink every now and then you won't get a 15% tip from me. Call me a cheap bastard if you want.
Im with you. I work extremely hard for my money and spend a LOT of money on my tools and stuff just so I can work and support myself and my family. Waiters and waitresses dont work that hard at least in my eyes. I worked through college on tips so I know how it all works, yeah you have to put up with ass holes and ppl not leaving any tips at all but thats all part of the job. If you put effort into making the customer feel good and happy about being there on top of bringing their food and drinks it would be a lot better. If I see that you dont care then I dont care either. Theres always that job you can go get elsewhere that doesnt pay in tips. I dont think they should have that percentage rule, then maybe the waitresses and waters will actually work for their money instead of just expecting to get what they feel they "deserve".
