There were more people on the pier than I have ever seen before in my life. There were at one time 36 people at the end doing nothing but catching hardtails. 5-7 at a time. They were using rigs big enough for Kings but had 8' long big sabiki rigs and were tearing the hardys up. I would of been pissed if the "fish" were running and had to fight for a spot because of all the "bait" catchers. There must've been 200+ out there. It was unreal. We saw nothing caught but hardtails and ladyfish. Unbelievable, the numbers there. They were lined up from the trough to the end on the east side. Unreal.

pensacola pier report

caught unlimited cigs and hardtails, .... spotted two kings and threw on them, nothing. played with flipper, that was fun. goin back later. i caught some weird jack looking fish, anyone know what it is? Got rained out temporarily around lunch time but quickly came back for more. Some kings on the deck in the morning with several hook ups and break offs afterwards. A few Spanish (I managed to land a fairly decent sized one and one smaller one using Gotchas). Hardtails were thick as usual. Saw a few schools of Tarpon just out of reach from the T and several good sized sharks. Flipper was out but didn't seem to be bothering us much and stayed far enough away from the pier to not interfere however, he did try to chase the big Spanish I caught but my reel was faster and he lost The highlight of my day was catching a hardtail on my Gotcha and having a big King take a swipe at it while I was reeling it in, got my heart pounding a little because I was using a light rod and tackle. Almost all nice 12-15 inch fish. They where eating the tiny pinfish and shrimp, if you could keep a shrimp on the hook. The wayside park pier probly isnt a secret spot right now, I would imagine the snappers are piled up around the whole bottom of the bridge and any other structure in the area. The bite totally died after about 10:00 pm when the tide went slack low so they like that moving water. Sorry, no pics.....the grill was calling louder then the camera :toast

Father's Day Report from OIP

Fished for the first time at OIP, water was really clear, winds could not make up their mind and were all over the place throughout the day. Lots of reds patrolling the botton near the beach but none eating, most were in the 30" size range. Pompano were fairly consistent all day. Tons of bait everywhere. I got there around 8am and the king run was over but was told there were a few on deck at sunrise. A few Spanish but they were being picky and wouldn't eat either. I mananged to hook up a few pompano but none would stay on the hook long enough to reach the cooler A kid fishing beside me earlier in the day managed to hook a 6 ft bull shark that he fought for quite a while. Left the pier around 3pm and went to Moes to get a burrito. Over all not a bad Father's Day, btw Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there, myself included! I guess it's true what I've heard about fishing when the moon is full, it makes sence since the fish have the extra light at night to feed. The next day they are not even remotely interested in your bait. Additionally there were tons and tons of bait fish everywhere yesterday at OIP and it was a litteral smorgasbord for the bigger fish.

broken pole

Me and a friend were fishing the pcola beach pier. So anyway I gave ol' Yankee a call yesterday and told him I was heading to our spot to do a little fishing and that I'd need some company! Somebody has to help net them fish right.....hahaha Anyway I got to the spot and yankee showed up shortly after. Night started off slow b/c of the low tide and after the first 2 hours the only thing I'd caught was a dink spanish and some bait. Well around sundown the wind picked up and shortly after the tide started coming in! The fishing was still pretty slow for about another hour and then while Yankee and I were discussing the mysteries of the universe.......I heard something that I hadn't heard for weeks! A screaming drag!!!! The ol' 750 was screaming my name! I pick it up and fish on! Yankee reels in his lines, and gets the net. Well how about that a nice bull red! (pics to be added latter) After getting the hook out yankee got a nice pic of me releasing that beauty back into the bay! Catch a pig fish for bait and my line is back out....soon Yankee has a nice tug and lands a fat blue! Before he could rebait his other rod bends over and he lands yet another fat blue!
Well we waited for another 30 minutes and called it a night.......some folks gotta work you know!

pensacola gulf pier

are the spanish and pompano still running .

Daughter's Spec

My daughter's first spec. The week started out with the dreaded southwest wind and the water was very muddy. We did not see any cobia, spanish or kings and didn't manage to catch any pompano. However, we caught plenty of flounder and tons of whiting. Not to mention the ladyfish and the cats that drove us crazy. Thursday, 5/22 the wind had shifted to southeast and the water started to clear some. I caught my very first redfish and got to eat my first redfish. It wasn't a monster, but it was in the middle of the slot, so it joined that days catch of founder, whiting and snapper at the dinner table. It was my second favorite fish of the week, flounder is pretty hard to beat.
All in all, it was a great week. We found the accommodations at Four Season's to be outstanding and the pier was first class. Most of the time, the two of us had the pier to ourselves. The most crowded it was during the week was 5 people counting my wife and I on the pier.

Here's a picture of the redfish.

Note: My wife took this picture with her camera and obviously she has not got the date and time set correctly.

Cobia on Tues. 5/6/08

OK, first time posting here but feel compelled...not sure if I am in the right section, so go easy on me...went out with a buddy of mine who had never been salt water fishing here (and who is a marine pilot just stationed in Pcola) to kill kingfish on Tues morning, and had some success...kept two of six caught. We ran in to the beach to anchor out in front of the Dock restaraunt for a burger and beer before heading in....this was about 12 noon. Right on the beach we saw some spanish so we flipped gotchas at em (this is all within the second sandbar...so 100 feet to the beach. We got a few nice spanish and were fixing to anchor when I saw a cobia coming along the first sandbar, right in front of us...I grabbed the spinning rod with the only lure I had on (the silver gotcha with the feather thing on the back) and lobbed it out in front of him. He took it and I set the drag carefully...25 LB Sufix and a 40 LB mono flouro leader made me nervous. I fought while my buddy drove...we chased for a while right on the beach..1 hour 22 minutes later we boat him...
I know that people are calling BS on the whole thing...thing is, I don't fish for Cobia, but like any other fisherman, I take my shots where I see em. I have pics and some video of the actual fight (some showing the gotcha in the corner of her mouth) which I will post tonight. The fish weighed 82.5 LBS 2 hours after being put in the box. This was my first time ever casting to a Cobia, and YES I know I got very lucky.

Now for the crazy part: I had no scale, but wanted to weigh her bc I knew she was pretty big. A guy down on the beach suggested I weigh her at the peir. I have the # in my phone, so I called to see if that was cool. The fellow on the phone said hell yes, bring her up. Well, before I could, I got a phone call from "Jerry" on the pier, telling me it would be easier to just pull up to the pier so he could lower us a scale...I thought bout it, asked him if it wouldn't piss off the guys fishing up there. He said just come to where he was waving which should not be a problem. I did it...I know ALL THE RULES...I dive, fish from boats and piers/bridges, etc....but the guy said come on so I did....Gimme a ticket if you don't like it, and I'll pay it.

Anyway, long and short of it is that after we weighed it, we dropped his scale in the drink, so I owe him a scale.( Jerry is a good guy, he later told me not to worry about the scale....but that is not right. I will be bringing you a new scale Jerry...and thanks for the help). Well, as we were sitting beside the pier, nowhere near anyones fishing line, we start hearing the "regular" cobia fisherman cursing at us, calling us every name you can think of. My buddy asks if they are serious. I say oh yes...I have seen the cobia fishermen on the pier RUN CHILDREN OVER trying to cast to a cobe or a turtle or whatever...broken poles and no apologies, knock a tourist over no apologies...no regard for the basic rules commonplace to any civilized scene. So to hear them cussing us out for catching "THEIR COBIA" was no shock to me. Of course I knew that they are notorious for lobbing jigs at boats. I have never had this to worry about bc I try to respect the pier and their lines and casting requirement (they could need to make a long cast to reach a cruising fish). Also, I think the law also requires 500', or something like that...?

Well we did not get hit, but 2 jigs plopped in about 2 feet from the boat, and one line went over, touching my buddy's shoulder. If I could have grabbed it in time, I would have cleated that line and taken off...Well, just for the guys that were throwing on us, we know who you are now. The REGULARS on the pier didn't want to ID you while everybody was around...but you IDIOTS THREW ON MY BOAT WITH 50 PEOPLE WATCHING YOU.

My trip to the pier with the deputies right after was not to arrest anyone...it was to figure out who we could talk to about it AFTERWARDS. One more thing, you show up great on video we took of you throwing on us. You are aware that aside from being pointless, stupid and dangerous, it is a FELONY to launch any missile at a boat....you did know that didn't you. What do you expect to achieve? Do you want to injure someone when you do that? You can't expect any good to come from it!

Here is the bottom line...you were JEALOUS and PISSED OFF because you think that was your fish. You think I "cut you off". Gimme a break. I don't even have the gear to properly pursue cobia. Quit your crying, because you would have casted to that fish, too. Oh yea, one more thing.. You saw us anchored on the beach right after that. If you were angry and bold enought to throw a jig at us when you were 35 feet in the air and safe, why not come throw it at us from 3 feet away? Maybe bc you would get something thrown back at you? If you threw on my boat, you are a coward. Get a life...I love to fish...been out 5 days straight now, but I know that there are more important things than a damned fish. When you figure that out, you will be all grown up.

As for MY cobia, it is delicious. I got some good advice back at Navy Point from REEL TWIZTID and his buddies on how to grill it up. AWESOME TASTING FISH!!

Thanks for all the help to those who helped, and screw you to those who hated.

Shark fishing the piers in the PCB area

Do any of the piers in the Pcb area allow shark fishing at night and if so what is the biggest reel they allow? Thanks

Anyone been fishing on pier last 2 days?

Just curious if anyone had been fishing at the P'cola beach pier the last couple of days. We were fishing for small sharks and bull reds and just about anything else that will take a bait.

We started off as usual with catching pinfish, finger mullet, white trout, and southern kingfish for bait.

I was the first to get a good run only to have the bait bit in half by a bluefish (made a perfect bite mark). Then Mikes rod goes off and he lands a little 2' sharp nose. The next person to get a run is Steven. He lands a fat sail cat. Then Mike lands another 2' sharp nose. In the meantime something keeps grabbing my bait but not committing to the hook. Finally I get the sorry sob and it's a blue.

Bladeco shows up and the fishing starts to heat up, nfortunately the fish biting are all cats. Big sail cats. I think we all caught a couple. Then finally Steven gets a good run but he's got a cast net in his hand. So I grab the rod and get to work. I can tell right away that it's a ray. Had him on the deck in short order and he's quickly sliced up for bait. I finally get a nice run......fish just peeling line and as soon as I set the hook, the shark goes airborne and lands on the line (I'm using 15lb) and he's gone. :banghead . At least this one pulled a little, I had something cut my line without even pulling out any drag about 45 minutes prior to that.

Now this is where things get good. Ken had been having a rough night.....lost two leaders due to cut offs but he quickly made up for it. He had a nice live bait out and noticed his bait going crazy. So he grabs the rod and starts to reel in slowly. FISH ON......I see the fish and think its a keeper red.......then some light hits it and Ken yells speck! I'm thinking holy s**t no way. This thing was huge. I lower the pier net and choked on my first try.......oh man I got scared b/c the fishing line wrapped around the net rope.......but I quickly got it in the net and Ken had a FAT 25" 4.14lb speck on the deck. The largest I've ever seen personally. High fives all around. Well for the next 45 minutes or so, it's back to catching catfish. Then Kens drag starts screaming and he's got a decent fish on.........get it close enough to see and it's a good little black tip. After a few close calls with the pilings I manage to get a rope around it and the fish hits the deck. It measured 38" to the fork. It's quickly gutted and given to a friend.

At this point I'm really wanting a decent fish. It's getting late and if Ken hooked into another good fish I was going to cut his line (j/k). Well I was soon awarded with my own screaming run.......1, 2, 3, set hook. FISH ON. I'm thinking it's a bull red b/c of the way it just steadily pulled line and then kinda gave up.......until it got close to the pier and I felt it role and then take off again. I had it back quickly and to the pier. It was still a little green and after a failed net attempt (don't ask why we were using a net) the shark spooked and shot under the pier......line broke and off it swam. No problem though because I was going to let this one go anyway. It was another black tip, guestimate at 50" total length.

Called it a night shortly after that.

Alabama Gulf State Pier

Rode down by the pier Last Sat. in the boat. It looks like the new build is out to about where the old pier stopped. So I guess it is about half way complete. They are building the hand rails just about as fast as they drive piles. No pier house yet, It seems that they are making good progress.:clap

Destin Bridge?

Has anybody been fishin destin bridge lately or the jetties?

Pensacola Pier this weekend

Plan on taking advantage of the long weekend coming up to fish the Pensacola Pier. The fishing was very slow to say the least. Not even a damn white trout! Tried cut bait, gulp shrimp and fresh dead shrimp. A couple of guys were using live shrimp for sheephead but they couln't get a bite either. There were some nice schools of mullet that came through right before dark, but that was the only action to be had out there. Has anyone caught anything off the t pier?

Pensacola Gulf Pier

Hello, I'm Tim and I'm new to the forum. Just wanted to share this King Mac with all my fellow anglers and anglerettes. Caught this off Gulf Pier today and thought for a minute the fish had me instead of me having the fish. But with help from my fellow fishing comrades we managed to get him on the deck.
